BERAB, JACOB

(1474-1546)
   Talmudist of Spanish origin. He lived in North Africa before settling in Safed. He initiated a plan to reintroduce ordination (semikhah) in order to establish an authoritative Jewish leadership and reconstitute the Sanhedrin. This project was opposed by Levi ibn Haviv. A controversy ensued and the plan failed.
